Energy Saving & The Environment

Hung up on the environment...

Peacocks uses millions of hangers each year. As part of the commitment to saving energy and preserving the environment, Peacocks realised the importance of re-using these hangers.

In 2005 Peacocks entered into a relationship with Braitrim to enable the re-use of the hangers. Braitrim’s comprehensive hanger re-use program allows garment hangers to be re-used many times before requiring recycling. There are two main benefits of this program. Firstly there’s less material wastage and secondly because the recycling process is energy-intensive, re-use vastly reduces the amount of energy consumed during the life of the hanger.

Peacocks now uses hangers that are specially designed to be re-used many times and still appear in perfect condition in-store. In addition, every effort is made to ensure a high collection and return rate of hangers in-store to minimise the need for new ones. It is details like this that together make a big impact on reducing Peacocks carbon footprint.

Fully committed to reducing energy use...

Looking after the environment is something that Peacocks is very serious about. Peacocks aims to continually improve its environmental performance by using resources efficiently and reducing waste energy.

Peacocks energy-saving objectives are…

1. Ensure that all business functions contribute to reduce energy consumption by 10%

2.
Re-invest savings to make sure reduced energy consumption is maintained long-term

3.
Raise awareness of the importance of energy-saving and motivate colleagues to play an active role in reducing energy consumption.

Winners of the Multi-Site Campaign...

Forming an Energy Saving Group with the support of the Board helped to kick start the Peacocks campaign, while regional briefings and training sessions were vital in rolling out the initiative to over 9,000 staff members at sites across the UK. Themed weeks kept the momentum going, as well as improvements in the energy performance of lighting, air-conditioning and time clocks within the shop floors.Peacocks regards the 100 days as just the beginning and has a number of further plans in the pipeline, including installing 100 Smart Meters across their sites so they can measure the impact of their work.

Reducing Peacocks carbon footprint...

As well as reducing energy use, reducing the overall environmental impact of the business is important to Peacocks. To help achieve this, Peacocks has joined the Carbon Trust Management Programme as part of the commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and environmental impact in areas such as transport and waste.

Buying smarter...

Part of reducing environmental impact is to choose your suppliers carefully. Peacocks is ever-mindful to purchase its energy from renewable sources whenever possible.

Waste not...

Peacocks continues to strive to be a company that looks after its environment. Peacocks recently began working with a recycling and waste management company in order to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill and to reduce cost.

Every Peacocks store plays their part in looking after the environment and has specific containers for recycling as well as a minimal capacity for residual general waste. Colleagues will be required to segregate their waste, processing the cardboard/paper and plastic/polythene separately.

Overall, Peacocks is a company that is committed to caring for the environment and will continue to look for and identify new ways to reduce the impact on the environment.
